The Challenge
In January 2024, we had 100,000 users. By December, we had crossed 1 million. Here's how we built systems that scaled 10x without breaking a sweat.
Our Architecture
Database Layer
We use PostgreSQL as our primary database, but with careful optimizations:
**Read replicas** - Distribute read load across multiple instances**Connection pooling** - PgBouncer handles 10,000+ concurrent connections**Partitioning** - Time-series data partitioned by monthCaching Strategy
Redis powers our caching layer with a multi-tier approach:
**L1 Cache** - In-memory, per-instance**L2 Cache** - Distributed Redis cluster**CDN Cache** - Static assets and API responsesMessage Queue
We use Apache Kafka for async processing:

1. Measure Everything
You can't improve what you don't measure. We track:
P50, P95, P99 latencies for all endpointsError rates by service and endpointResource utilization (CPU, memory, I/O)2. Fail Gracefully
Systems will fail. Design for it:
Circuit breakers prevent cascade failuresGraceful degradation maintains core functionalityAutomated recovery reduces manual intervention3. Scale Horizontally
Vertical scaling has limits. We designed for horizontal scale:
Stateless services enable easy replicationSharding distributes load across instancesAuto-scaling responds to demandResults
Our investment in scalability paid off:
**99.99% uptime** in 2024**<50ms P95 latency** globally**$0 revenue lost** to outagesWhat's Next
We're exploring:
Edge computing for even lower latencyMulti-region active-active deploymentMachine learning for predictive scalingBuilding for scale is an ongoing journey. We're excited to keep pushing the boundaries of what's possible.
